The Study Tour to Understand the Importance of Peace

When I applied for the Matsumae International Foundation fellowship, I sought both professional and personal growth. As a civil engineer and professor in Croatia, I have long researched traditional earthen houses- sustainable but earthquake-prone structures that still house millions of people around the world. The MIF programme and Professor Takayoshi Aoki at Nagoya City University gave me the opportunity to learn from leading experts and build a bridge between Croatia and Japan.

When I arrived in Japan, I felt both excitement and humility. Life here is full of contrasts, reminding me of the balance between tradition and modernity. In Nagoya, I pass a small shrine on my way to a modern campus or hear the silence of a teahouse near a busy railway station. Everyday details- from efficient public transport to the friendliness of shop workers- have become lessons in discipline, respect, and harmony.

My host lab welcomed me warmly. Conversations with colleagues about research, food, and traditions soon turned into friendships. The study trip organized by the MIF moved me deeply. Standing in front of the Hiroshima Peace Memorial, I understood Dr. Matsumae’s philosophy: science and technology must be guided by a moral compass. I realized how fragile life is – it can disappear in a second – while the pursuit of power can bring suffering to generations. This lesson reminds me to remain humble, seek understanding, and work for a better world characterized by peace and prosperity.

Beyond research, I explored Japanese culture with curiosity. I enjoyed climbing indoor walls and meeting friends. I wandered through the temples of Kyoto and tasted foods I could never have imagined. The Japanese language is nuanced; even a word like “sumimasen” has meanings ranging from apology to gratitude. Empathy is shown daily in small gestures. Everyday life is in contrast to Croatia: umbrellas are opened on sunny days, people sleep in public, farewells after an izakaya include bows and long goodbyes, and cars rarely honk as if patience is a shared rule.

In my research, I have developed non-linear numerical models to predict the seismic behavior of earthen houses. This work is important to understand their performance and propose guidelines that can strengthen cultural heritage against earthquakes. The fellowship gave me access to advanced tools but also taught me that good research depends not only on data and models, but also on openness, dialogue, and shared values.

Looking to the future, I want to bring these experiences back to Croatia. I aim to apply Japanese precision and resilience in my research and teaching. The fellowship has opened doors to collaborations, and I hope that the network will continue to grow. By connecting Croatia and Japan, we can contribute to global knowledge about sustainable building and a culture of peace.

Finally, I would like to thank the Matsumae International Foundation for this opportunity, Aoki-sensei for his mentorship, and Ms. Yuka Amano for her kind support. This fellowship was more than just research; it was a lesson in humanity, friendship, and responsibility for the future.
