On March 14th, a Presentation Meeting for Kyoto University was held at a hotel in Kyoto. Kyoto University will be a host institution for 7 MIF Fellows, among the total of 24 Fellows, during the academic year of 2018. All the host professors and the related personnel from the University participated in the meeting to receive our presentation about logistical matter for receiving the coming Fellows. The first 2 Fellows will be arriving in Kyoto on the 2nd of April which is less than 3 weeks from today.

Graduation Ceremonies for 3 MIF Fellows from Chile, Cambodia and Nigeria were held both on the 27th and 28th of February at MIF’s reception house in Tokyo.  At the ceremonies, Prof. HASHIMOTO, MIF’s Chairperson, directly presented the Certificates of Accomplishment and memorial medals to the respective Fellows. After the ceremonies, Prof. HASHIMOTO hosted farewell receptions where the Fellows promised to develop the relationships among the Fellows and with MIF.

The 15th Meeting of Board of Trustees of MIF was held on February 16 and the resignation by Mr. Tatsuo SEKINO, Executive Director, was accepted. As Mr. SEKINO’s successor, Dr. Keiichi KATAYAMA has been appointed to be the new Executive Director. Dr. KATAYAMA is a former Professor at the Department of Engineering of Tokai University and is concurrently a member of MIF Screening Committee.

On February 6, 2018, Dr. Hussein ZNAD, an Iraqi 2005 Fellow visited MIF. Dr. ZNAD is now teaching at Curtin University in Perth, Australia. He returned to Tokyo this time with an invitation by Tokyo Institute of Technology to conduct his short-term research there. MIF recognizes ourselves as Fellows’ “home away from homes” and look forward to their return to Japan as travelers or researchers.

H.E. Dr. Ahmed M. R. NAILI, Charge d’affairs a.i. of Libya to Japan, visited MIF and had a very constructive meeting with Prof. Toshiaki HASHIMOTO, MIF’s Chairperson. As MIF has never invited a fellow from Libya yet, Prof. HASHIMOTO emphasized that MIF looks forward to receiving the application documents from Libya for our fellowship program next academic year.
