On April 24, H.E. Mr. Gustavo AYARES, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Chile to Japan, together with Ms. Catalina BARCELO, Second Secretary, visited MIF and had a very constructive meeting with Prof. Toshiaki HASHIMOTO, MIF’s Chairperson, and Prof. Keiichi KATAYAMA, Executive Director. MIF has ever invited 8 Chilean fellows since 1987. However, the total number of applicants from Latin American nations are decreasing recently. Ambassador AYARES agreed to continue conversations with MIF in order to make Latin American researchers/scholars pay more attention upon MIF Fellowship Program.

Graduation Ceremonies for 3 MIF Fellows from Tunisia, Algeria and Mozambique was held on the 30th of March at MIF’s reception house in Tokyo.  At the ceremony, Prof. HASHIMOTO, MIF’s Chairperson, directly presented the Certificates of Accomplishment and memorial medals to the respective Fellows. After the ceremony, Prof. HASHIMOTO hosted farewell luncheon where the Fellows promised to develop the relationships among the Fellows and with MIF. All the 22 2017 Fellows have returned to their home countries.

On the 22nd of March, MIF received a delegation consisting of teachers from high schools affiliated to Tokai University. The purpose of their visit this time was to understand Dr. Shigeyoshi MATSUMAE’s philosophy to found MIF and our current fellowship program. The presentation was made directly by Prof. Toshiaki HASHIMOTO, MIF Chairperson, and there was an active Q&A session after his presentation.

H.E. Dr. Bashir MOHABBAT, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Islamic Republic of Afghanistan to Japan, and Mr. Asif AGAH, Second Secretary, visited MIF and had a very constructive meeting with Prof. Keiichi KATAYAMA, MIF’s Executive Director. As MIF has never hosted a fellow from Afghanistan yet, Prof. KATAYAMA emphasized that MIF looks forward to receiving the application documents from Afghanistan for our fellowship program next academic year as well as years to come.

On March 14th, a Presentation Meeting for Kyoto University was held at a hotel in Kyoto. Kyoto University will be a host institution for 7 MIF Fellows, among the total of 24 Fellows, during the academic year of 2018. All the host professors and the related personnel from the University participated in the meeting to receive our presentation about logistical matter for receiving the coming Fellows. The first 2 Fellows will be arriving in Kyoto on the 2nd of April which is less than 3 weeks from today.
